Choral Art at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity

Choral Art is an intensive workshop that explores the creation and presentation of choral music in the 21st century. There are two components to this program, a three-week residency for 5 composers and 5 conductors, and weekend-workshops for community choral ensembles.

Both programs are led by Michael Zaugg with the assistance of Pro Coro Canada and an international faculty. Since the first edition, the faculty included Lone Larsen (Sweden), Ugis Praulins (Latvia), Tarik O’Regan (UK) and Sven Helbig (Germany).

Composers and conductors will work closely with the faculty and resident choir, Pro Coro Canada, to explore and create new works and to hone their conducting skills respectively. Choirs will explore movement and improvisation as well as refine their sound as an ensemble through workshops and masterclasses. Participants in this program will become immersed in the world of choral art. They will have the opportunity to collaborate daily for up to five hours with the award-winning, international composition and conductor faculty, and work with the ensemble-in-residence Pro Coro Canada.

Choral groups will work on pre-existing repertoire, explore new works with participants, and further refine their craft through workshops, vocal coaching and masterclasses.  Choirs will also explore movement and improvisation, and hear the resident choir Pro Coro Canada in performance.
