4th October 2011 : For Immediate Release

Rachmaninoff Vespers to open St. Lawrence Choir’s 40th Anniversary Season

Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil (more widely known as the Vespers) will be the major work hear at the opening concert of the St. Lawrence Choir’s 40th Anniversary season.

The concert will take place at the Church of the Immaculate Conception (Église Immaculée-Conception), 4201 Papineau Street, Montreal, on Saturday 15th October at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are priced as follows: $35 priority seating, $25 adults, $20 seniors and $10 students.

On this occasion the St. Lawrence Choir will be joined by the Cantata Singers Ottawa to create a powerful yet agile 120-voice choir that will bring depth and power to this masterpiece of choral music. Soloists are the Montréal-based Sonia Sasseville (contralto) and David Menzies (tenor) and the conductor is Michael Zaugg, who is the current artistic director of both choirs.

The programme includes other gems from composers of the Russian Orthodox tradition (Sheremetev, Kalinnikov, Ippolitov-Ivanov etc.) as well as a work by living Ukranian composer Roman Hurko.

Add flickering candlelight and a discreet display of Russian Ikonography in the impressive Église Immaculée-Conception and you have a season-opener not to be missed.
